Mature Adult Party Tips - Hydration
This is not a Martha Stewart kind of post. “Party” in this case refers to going out and having a good time; also known as partying. Partying can include alcohol, dancing, sexy outfits, fun make-up (guys too), sex, and perhaps brunch the next day. When you were 21, you could probably go out at all hours of the night and still get to work the next day with not even a headache. Our older bodies are not as forgiving, and it is smart to prepare for the partying beforehand. So here are some tips and tricks I’ve learned through personal experience or from very knowledgeable friends.
Hydration
Humans are a good 60-70% water and we need it to survive. Your body will tell you when you haven’t had enough water enter your system. Headaches, nausea, tiredness, and dizziness are all things your body does to remind you to drink water.
Stay hydrated by:
Alternating alcoholic beverages with a cup of water.
Get blended versions of your drinks like margaritas and daquiris. The blended version forces you to take in more water than the “on ice” version. When I go to Hedonism II, one of my favorite drinks is a vodka slush – vodka, ice, and a splash of lime juice blended make for a refreshing beverage that I can drink all day. I’m hydrating and getting buzzed at the same time.
While you’re at it, get a salted rim on that margarita. Normally, I stay away from extra salt because I’m over 50 and have to watch my blood pressure. But the salt will help your body retain fluids. That’s really one of the main ingredients in those hydration powders. And speaking of hydration powders…
Liquid IV – I cannot recommend this enough. Liquid IV is a hydration powder that you add to water and drink when you need to rehydrate. I’ve tried the other versions and have not yet found anything that works as well as Liquid IV. It is available in a variety of flavors. It’s not cheap, but it’s so worth it. Amazon sells it for $21-26 per pack of 16, and COSTCO sometimes has it on sale for $21 a pack. When I travel, I usually bring enough for me and one other person to drink at least one per night before going to bed. My son can tell you why he loves it for rehydrating during training, but I’m betting now that he’s hitting the college party tour, the hangover cure is just as valuable to him. I just ordered the Seaberry flavor for Fantasy Fest. I’ll let you know how it tastes. The Lemon-Lime is a pretty standard flavor, like Gatorade. Take a look at the other flavors offered: Liquid IV
Stay out of the sun. Yes, we should be getting 15 minutes a day of sun like the complicated house plants we are, but you can lose fluids much faster in the sun. Even if it doesn’t seem like you are sweating that much, the sun will evaporate that sweat faster leaving you quite dried out. And if you are in a pool, that’s even more reason to hydrate to the max. When we are in a pool, we can still sweat, but we don’t notice it since we are wet from the pool.
